The China Institute
Founded in 1926 by American educators John Dewey, Paul Monroe, and Chinese scholars Hu Shi and Kuo Ping-Wen, China Institute in America is an internationally renowned U.S. non-partisan, non-profit cultural and educational organization, that dedicated to deepening the world’s understanding of China through programs in art, business, culinary, culture, and education.
The China Institute has always been a bridge for cultural exchanges between the East and the West. For 98 years, China Institute has reached millions of people, providing them with the tools to better understand the complexity and dynamism that is China. The Institute is a leader in providing the insight, knowledge, and context about China that goes beyond the headlines.
From being a window to China in the United States, the China Institute has become a bridge that closely connects Chinese and Western cultures. Over the years, it has become a gathering place for Chinese Americas to study and exchange ideas.
美国华美协进社由美国教育家约翰·杜威、保罗·门罗和中国学者胡适、郭炳文于 1926 年创立,是美国一家国际知名的无党派非营利性文化教育机构,致力于通过艺术、商业、烹饪、文化和教育等项目加深世界对中国的了解。98年来,华美协进社一直是东西方文化交流的桥梁, 是从美国了解中国的窗口。多年来,它已成为美国华人的聚集地, 来这里学习和交流。

The Finance and Economics (FnE) Club
The Finance and Economics Club (the “FnE Club”) is a membership-based and funded affinity group sponsored by the China Institute in America. The FnE Club’s initiative is aimed at better serving the Chinese American community with educational programs and activities related to timely discussions of business and investment issues of interest to the Chinese American community and bridging the gap between Wall Street and Main Street.
The FnE Club will be governed by a board of members. The FnE Club encourages the exchange and sharing of knowledge and ideas on economics, finance and investment business related matters between the Club members and communities. We develop and promote the education program collaborations with other financial institutions, universities, alumni associations, and non-profit organizations.
The programs of the FnE Club include seminars, panel discussions, conferences, training programs, and special topics/industry/executives’ interviews. The Club will provide a platform with networking opportunities for young Chinese Americas and club members for career development and professional growth, and acquire knowledge and insight, develop business savviness, and improve financial health.
华美金融经济俱乐部(“FnE俱乐部”)致力于普及推广美国华人金融知识教育,旨在更好地服务华人社区,为华尔街金融专业人士和民众投资之间搭桥交流, 共谋发展。华美金融经济俱乐部由会员董事会管理。

Advisory Board

Dr. Li Deng is the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer and Global Head of Machine Learning at Vatic Investments. Recognized as one of the world's leading experts in AI, speech technology, and machine learning. Dr. Deng was previously the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer and Head of Machine Learning at Citadel. Before that, he was the Chief Scientist of AI, Founder of the Deep Learning Technology Center, and Partner Research Manager at Microsoft for over 17 years. Dr. Deng is a Fellow of the Academy of Engineering of Canada, the Academy of Sciences (Washington State), IEEE, the Acoustical Society of America, and ISCA, among other technical societies. He has been honored with numerous awards for his pioneering AI research on disrupting speech recognition using large-scale deep learning. During his nearly 30-year career in academia, technology and finance, Dr. Deng has published more than 350 academic papers and authored several books on machine learning and AI, as well as lectured at many of the world’s top universities, institutes and finance summits. In 2012, he published a groundbreaking paper on deep neural networks for speech recognition with Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, a cognitive psychologist and computer scientist who is recognized as the “Godfather of Deep Learning”. Prior to Microsoft, Dr. Deng worked for nearly a decade as a tenured professor at the University of Waterloo. He earned his Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since 2000, Dr. Deng has also been an Affiliate Full Professor at the University of Washington.

Prof. Zhiwu Chen is Chair and Cheng Yu-Tung Professor in Finance at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He currently serves as director of both Hong Kong Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (HKIHSS) and Centre for Quantitative History (CQH). Professor Chen was a former Professor of Finance at Yale University (1999-2017) and a Special-Term Visiting Professor at Peking University (School of Economics) and Tsinghua University (School of Social Sciences). Prof. Chen’s research covers finance theory, the sociology of finance, economic history, quantitative history, emerging markets, as well as China’s economy and capital markets. He has received research awards including the Graham and Dodd Award (2013), the Pacesetter Research Award (1999), the Merton Miller Prize (1994), and the Chicago Board Options Exchange Competitive Research Award (1994). He has also received a number of book awards in China and Hong Kong, among which are 23 awards for The Logic of Finance in China and Hong Kong, and the best book award from hexun.com for Why are the Chinese Industrious and Yet Not Rich. Prof. Chen has been a member of the HKU Council since November 2018. He also served on the International Advisory Board of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) (2012-19), the Expert Advisory Board for the formation of the China Investment Corporation (2007), and the board of directors as an independent director for corporates. He was on the Board of Trustees of the Yale-China Association and the 12th and 13th Five-Year Plan Advisory Commission to the Beijing Municipal Government. He was a co-founder and partner of Zebra Capital Management from 2001 to 2011. Prof. Chen is a frequent contributor to media publications in China on topics of economic policy, market development, institutional reform, and historical research. His work has been widely published and regularly featured in major newspapers and magazines in the United States, Hong Kong, China and many other countries. Professor Chen received his PhD in financial economics from Yale University in 1990. He has been an endowed professor since joining HKU in July 2016. Professor Chen was conferred the title of Chair Professor of Finance in recognition of his contribution to finance in July 2019.
Board of Directors

Mr. Che Guan is a Vice President and Principal Data Scientist at AllianceBernstein. Over the years, Dr. Guan has been actively engaged in development and research of machine learning, data science, quantitative strategy, and financial application of natural language processing with top financial firms of J. P. Morgan, AllianceBernstein, and Raymond James. He holds a PhD in electrical engineering.
